Am I the only person who felt the 3 1/2 hours? I mean, I don't have a short attention span, I liked FOTR a lot and loved TTT, and like other good epic long movies, but at some points, I could really just feel the running time. A good half-hour to an hour could have been cut out of this easily. The battles were amazing, but after 5 or 6 of them, got repetitive and a bit boring. The one part of the movie that I would not cut at all was the beginning, I thought the Smeagol Deagol scene was the best of the movie. The movie truly is epic, but I don't think PJ should win for this. Cutting is part of a director's job, and he did not cut this properly. It did not need to be 3 1/2 hours. It's still a very good end to the trilogy, but just too drawn out, at points like an M. Night Shamaylan movie. Still one of the epics of our time, and a great movie, but I have to say, I enjoyed the original SW trilogy more. I think I also have to say I enjoyed Matrix Revolutions more than ROTK, though I'm one of the few whole enjoyed it at all, to my surprise and chagrin. I say Edward Zwick should win for best director, though I haven't seen Lost in Translation and Sofia Coppola could also, and it definitely should not win best picture.

Well, I guess some people feel differently about the movie. Personally, I will be extremely upset if the extended edition of ROTK is any shorter than 6 hours. I heard rumours that before any cuts were made to the movie it was 9 hours long. I think it seems like it was cut badly because there was stuff PJ wanted and needed to put in the movie, but higher powers set the limit for the running time. The stuff PJ cut was, in my opinion, important to the story; not enough to make the movie confusing without them, but they would have made the movie flow better if they were added. Of course, certain scenes could have been deleted, for instance, any scene with Legolas. Sorry, I just hate that guy.

And if PJ decides to do another trilogy tuesday sort of thing, with all three extended editions, I will be out there sitting and waiting to go watch (hopefully!) 13 hours of LOTR. There is nothing else worth camping out for anymore; I doubt episode 3 will even warrant a midnight viewing, let alone camping out for a day.

I think PJ deserves an oscar. Maybe not necessarily for ROTK, but for the trilogy. Since he hasn't gotten one yet, I say now is a great time for it.

I'm cool with giving PJ an academy award. any Episode 3 campers however, deserve thunderstorms of biblical proportions.

Well, I thought of one more reason lotr beats starwars. the issue of smoking.

in AOTC, the death stick scene is just embarrassing. besides the points chef raises, we KNOW what obi-wan is doing with the mind trick and all.

move along (move along)

in ROTK, Merry's confronting Pippin about his smoking too much doesn't wrap up tidily. rather, it addresses addiction with heartfelt concern. (I don't remember that scene from the book, but) unlike CLONES, I didn't predict how the scene would play out.

I don't think Merry was confonting him about his smoking problem, I think it was just something to remember him by because they were being seperated and didn't know when/if they would ever see each other again. The bag of weed was just a reminder of the Shire and of their friendship; if I'm not mistaken, there is supposed to be a scene stuck in there where Merry tells Pip that they will see the Shire again. It would have been cute. Something PJ cut at the last minute! GRR!!

But I thought that Merry and Pippin being high was hilarious, the way they were both giggling and eating everything at Isengard. I loved it. biggrin.gif
Maybe that's why Pip liked the Palantir so much, because he was wasted and liked the pretty lights inside swirling around.

PIPPIN DOES SMOKE TOO MUCH!!!

at the end of the Two Towers (EE), Merry and Pippin find two large barrels of pipe weed! he smoked a whole barrel in a few days! but Merry's a bit of a hypocrit, cause he wasn't far behind. besides which pipe weed tobaccy is a little wacky and a barrel a day can't be good. I don't think Merry was making a health call, i think he was more concearned that Pippin didn't make the first supply they had come across in over a year last...

SWs' death sticks are apperently not cigarettes, that substantionatley shorten your life everytime you smoke one and i belive halucinations are involved... (i can't find the place i got this from). huh.gif

Yeah that's my opinion too, he deserves an oscar for what he's done, and also I think deserved one for TTT, though I haven't seen Pianist and can't argue with Polansky getting it. Unfotunately it will be for what I think is the weakest, but as you say, he deserves it for the achievement of the trilogy.

i just want to take george lucas' heavy wallet and bat him across the face until he screams like a schoolgirl and then i'm going to roll him in bantha shit and drop him into a sarlac pit with that hideous crossdresser from the movie Little Nicky. he has defiled one of the greatest sagas of all time and he still gets off with the "holier than thou, my shit don't stink" attitude.

I liked the LOTR trilogy and all, but I don't think it deserves an Oscar. Well, maybe the best picture award is ok, but no best actor/actress etc... Movie had like 80 speaking roles so fuck that shit boy!

I'd like to see the Bob Saget version of JEDI, and possibly TPM.

you know, the roar of the crowd when Ewoks perform dutifully. Especially when the one slingshots himself. I really don't know the banter Saget uses, I despise that program, have never intentionally watched it. but maybe two wrongs could make a right? OF COURSE, JEDI is a wonderful film. So what would it hurt to add a little cheerleading?

And I suggest JEDI because of it's attempt with lame humor. cheesy sound effects would heighten the hilarity. TPM takes itself so damned seriously, it wouldn't be nearly as effective. might as well try to liven up cspan.

Well, seeing as how ROTK (or any part of the trilogy) was not nominated for any acting awards, supporting or otherwise, I figure it would be pretty hard for them to win any acting awards. But you know, that's just my opinion. Most of the nominations ROTK recieved were for technical things, like sound editing and crap like that.
And as you said, there were a lot of speaking parts in the movie, and it would be hard to narrow it down to one or two outstanding performances. Everyone talks about Sean Astin and how great he was, but I really didn't think it was outstanding or anything. But you said it more eloquently than I can-
