I don't like the idea of amateur adventure games based on someone else's intellectual property. Maybe my view on such things has been coloured by that godawful Rescue Rangers game I reviewed once.

Around the time I was making Arthur Yahtzee, my best friend at school Mike Dodson made some Red Dwarf adventure games in Visual Basic that were pretty cool, and you can still get them from this site.

Fun fact: Michael Dodson is, at time of writing, in Calais, teaching English to French schoolkids.

Love is for the weak.

You've never had to love some of the freaks I've called girlfriends then.

Anyway, theres plenty of love on the Chefelf forums. We are, in fact, one big happy family. Its just the rampant local cynicism, I think.

Finally, Red Dwarf does indeed rule. I've been quite happy in the last few days sitting down with a bundle of people and watching Red Dwarf/Blackadder DVDs. Joyous times.

I agree, Yahtzee. However, we are making every attempt to make sure it looks really good and plays just as well. We're also keeping it as faithful to the books and series as possible.

I'm also working on a Star Wars game in AGS too, set during the Clone Wars. Its a completly independant story set in parallel with the events after Episode II. It's gonna be a proper adventure though, with a coherant story, believable characters and the option of playing it puzzley/actiony.

Yes, I know the general response to Star Wars games these days. And yes, I wanna break that mould.

Tell me, DC, have you ever finished an AGS game before? I ask because you're talking about a very ambitious project, and declaring a very ambitious project for your first ever game never turns out well.

By the way, when can we expect to see 7 Days a Skeptic merch? "I saved myself from a machete-wielding welder and all I got was this lousy t-shirt!"

No. I've made some mini-adventure games in KNP that worked Ok, but I understand it's a completly different kettle of fish compared to AGS.

I have considered the possibility that we're in the deep end a bit. However, this isn't an idea Ive literally popped out of the air - I've been working at the idea for over a year now.

Y'see I was gonna make it in KNP, because when its used properly it can do amazing things (like the Monkey Island 2 remake on the Fangames website I'm on). Having seen what can be done in AGS, I realised it was much easier to use for my purposes.

I do understand what you're saying Yahtzee. Both Red Dwarf and the Star Wars games are pretty ambitious. But I and my partner have a very good idea what does and doesn't make a good adventure game. And we're willing to pull as much effort and as much time into it to make sure they're as fun and satisfying to play as possible.

If it'll help convince ya we're on the level, I could post a Jpeg of a Red Dwarf background. It's a certain McDonalds on Mimas...

I'd love to have a crack at something in AGS, but I'm an incompetent, and my Paint skills are less than reprehensable.

...and on my budget, buying a decent paint package is one expense too many.

I use Artgem if I need to do any background drafts. Its really good, and has the best magic wand feature Ive seen. It's shareware, but its no longer supported - so you can get a keygen for it without feeling guilty.

An addmendum to Yahtzee's worries - me and Mr. Flibble (my partner) are both pretty competent in AGS, and although I'm not the greatest artist in the world, Flibble's talents are vast.

As for ambitious projects, I know of plenty more than ours - a user of Fangames.co.uk, Infamous-Adventurers, have a canon of three debut projects on the mend - One of which is a remake of Kings Quest III, the other is Quest for Infamy - So You Want to be a Villain?, set in the Quest for Glory universe.

Well, that's an editing program and a half! I might actually be able to draw comics that don't look like a rats arse!

Happy to help Chlyd.

One tiny snag with the unregistered version - it can only save as ArtGem AGP files. So unless you want the tedium of exporting into Paint and re-saving it, you'll need the regitration key. Lemme know what version you've got (unless you've already cracked it) and I'll find it for you.
