Chefelf, you're delineating the different between prescriptive ("proper", taught by grade school teachers) and descriptive (understandable) grammar. Linguists agree... anything that can be understood, with clear meaning, is A-OK by them.

True. But we Australians were just retaliating against an American criticising our English spelling when it's the more widely used. That's all.

I'm all for the notion that if you can communicate meaning effectively and be understood then you have communicated successfully.

I know that... but on an Internet Forum is "proper" English even worth bringing up?
