In the midst of all the hype surrounding the DVD changes, I realized there are quite a few changes that would work, and I'm sure I'm not alone. Here's what I've come up with:

-The lightsabers in the first movie do look pretty crappy and could use refurbrishing, especially in the Obi Wan/Vader duel.

-It would be cool for the cantina scene to be restored in full, with Han Solo sitting with the slut.

-Put the speeder sequences back how they were, or fix up the CGI.

-Fix the huge matte lines on the rancor, I never understood why those couldn't be edited out.

Dub someone else's voice over the line "Two fighters against a Star Destroyer?"

Also, it might be interesting to provide alternative (not DEFINITIVE) editions with the extra scenes. Showing Han Solo with that other woman would work quite well in an Extended Edition of the movie (much like the Extended Editions of The Lord of the Rings films). I'd also like to see those scenes with Luke and his friends at Toshi's station. This kind of thing would be interesting, new, exciting, etc... rather than having Greedo shoot first.

In Return of the Jedi, they could do some improvements there. Cut down on Ewoks as much as possible, even if twenty minutes of film goes bye-bye. Just get rid of as much as you can. The less Ewoks, the better.

Remove slapstick comedy. Remove Boba Fett from Jabba the Hutt's palace and the skiff scenes.

Don't feed that poor girl to the rancor. I hate that so much. It's horrible and unnecessary. The rancor gets a perfectly good introduction when Jabba throws Luke down to it. This earlier scene, I could really live without. It's just not in the spirit of films that are supposed to be for children and families. If I wanted to see innocent women dying terrifying deaths, devoured by monsters (which I don't), then I'd just rent Jaws. If someone else really must be fed to the rancor, may I recommend that annoying little muppet Salucious Crumb?

Next - when Luke and Leia swing off Jabba's barge to the other skiff, use an alternative camera angle so we can actually see them from the side sailing other the great gap between the two vehicles, precariously over the sarlaac pit. That shot they use in the actual film is really dull and uninspiring. It's shown from behind and makes it look as though they're just riding a little kids flying fox.

These sorts of editing things can really make a huge difference to the overal impact of a scene.

Also when Lando figures out that the Death Star's shield is still up and tells all the pilots to pull up, have a few of them crash into the shield and explode. Put some more tension into the space fight.

What else? Lando should probably die at the end.

Oh yes, there's a very cool little moment when the medical frigate goes broadside against a Star Destroyer and the two ships pummel the crap out of each other. This is great. I'd like to see this small moment from the battle drawn out for just a few more seconds.

That's just some from the top of my head. I may think of more later.

Oh, wait! With the advance of technology, do you think we have come to a stage where we could now digitally replace the ewoks with wookies?

One change I forgot: remove the sarlaac's burp that comes after eating Boba Fett. That part really sucked.

I'm against the changes as a general rule...

he could have:

editied out all burps and farts...

redub the ESB question about the Ion Cannon...

and edit out and credit with lucas name, as this in no way represents his vision, and therefore has nothing to do with the greatness of the OT and it's success...

so uh hem....

Lando really shouldn't die. I think Vader's death is enough tragedy. I really don't support adding in much of anything to the OT but retooling some of the scenes would work well.

all together... Boba Fett should not have been in ROTJ... I twould have made his character cooler... and more consistant.

not every bad guy has to die... (not that he was really a bad guy)
some get away....

his presence was a 'cash-in' on his popularity...
his lame ass "death" (later retreived by EU writters and comic books)
made him less cool... GL doesn't know even how to show loyalty to fictional characters that made him famous...

so... i say edit BF out all together...

---O-T-O-H---

but in defence of him being at jabas palace, it did look like there was a party going on... and if you were a gangster kingpin you'd invite the most notorios hit man in the galaxy... but i don't know if he'd hang out for like three days... there's kneecaps to be blasted!

The whole idea that Boba Fett was there to party is shit. Who parties fully armed, armored and with a damned full helmet on. It only got more absurd when you saw him grooving to the dancing and singing.

That's a good point, J M.

And regarding Lando's death, I don't really mind either way. So let's let him live.

But definitely save that girl from the rancor. Throw in Salucious Crumb! Down with the lizard... er.. monkey... gremlin... thing.

And remove Threepio from Endor. His presence there is ridiculous. Who takes a shiny gold droid who can't even keep his voice low on a secret mission to a forest moon?

Who remembers this scene -

Leia - It only takes one to sound the alarm.

Han - Then we'll do it real quiet-like.

Threepio - OH MY! OH PRINCESS LEIA!

Also loved it how none of the biker scouts turned their heads. They didn't hear this, hey? That's about as stupid as that girl in Under Siege who didn't hear all the crew members being shot and rounded, while she waited in a birthday cake for fifteen hours. Why can't people HEAR in movies?

Here are my changes I'd make to ROTJ if I had "almighty powers"

Use ideas Lucas had rejected in his first draft(s):

1. Have Coruscant as the opening planet with the two death-star-like satelites being constructed to protect the planet, and Endor is the "Sanctuary Moon" (which Palpatine actually calls it, and makes no sense in the movies!!! As a side note, Lucas says that the moon is a protected environment, and that no development can be done on it despite the over-population of Coruscant. So, the Emperor eventually plans to build his palace on Endor... see later point).

2. Boba Fett survives the sarlacc pit, blowing his way out. I would then make Boba Fett track Han and gang down just because its personal now.

3. Luke and Leia are NOT brother and sister. Leia is just the first of the new Order of Jedi to appear. This changes nothing about how Luke feels about her, and Vader and Palpatine can still use it as leverage or threat against Luke.

4. The Droids are left behind at the shuttle to monitor transmissions, to give the team a warning if the Empire is onto them. Then, the Ewoks show up at the shuttle and take the droids from there... also, the Ewoks would be a lot more feral in looks and attitude (would've made sense to have the Ewoks played by athletic children than clumsy, uncoordinated midgets and dwarfs).

5. Vader brings Luke to Coruscant, and into the deep heart of then planet (like those wonderful McQuarrie paintings illustrate), and there the emperor has his lair deep underground, surrounded by a pit of lava; which would bookend well with the PT's (if they were made right). The same classic father/son battle, etc., but this time, Vader throws the Emperor into the pit of lava, which creates a chain-reaction and Luke has to get Vader out of the Emperor's lair. Wouldn't it be cool to see the Imperial palace go up in a volcanic eruption? smile.gif

6. Boba Fett corners Han and the crew on Endor, they battle him and the Imperials. In my rewrite, I had these large machines which clear away the trees so the Empire can build their fortresses, etc.. Well, 3PO and R2 commandeer one of these vehicles to take out the shield generator. Han and Chewie end up battling Boba Fett on top of the machine and ultimately, Boba gets flung into the gigantic, rotating blades. Finally, the droids drive the big machine into the shield generator while Lando and Wedge each take out their own satelite.

So, that's my changes....

A lot of interesting ideas there. I quite like 1, 3 and 5. Not too keen on seeing Boba Fett on a personal vendetta but the other stuff is very cool.

Thank you! Thank you! I thougght I was the only one who thougt it was sooo stupid! In "The courtship of Princess Leia" (The only SW book I have) in similar situation (forest planet) the author has Threepio dressed in camouflage fatigues. Perhaps in SE they should have dressed the droid in one of these cute jackets and helmets? *rolling with laughter"

I didn't think that Boba Fett's inclusion in ROTJ was really inappropriate... he did do something pretty big for Jabba and I guess he was taking some time off from work. Also, he could have been working as a bodyguard for a time.

But then again, maybe it isn't REALLY that appropriate! But I do wish they'd stop tampering with the OT... not that I really care at this time.
