Hey, it's me again.

after stomaching disc 2 of AOTC, I was given a blessing from the maker. 2001 ASO was playing on the telly. Now there's fine filmmaking for you. the commentator spoke that the younger kids of the time really liked repeated viewings because the movie left so many questions.

I'm not an ASO expert, but I respect those who are. wasn't it based on a story called the sentinal or something? (asimov?) I was trying to explain it to my wife and I was reminded how little I know. but I've always enjoyed the discussion.

2001 kicks ass.. but it is sometimes hard to get people to watch it. Good ol' Kubrick wanted to make it as realistic as possible, so that meant a lot of slow movement. It was also the first movie in history to have actual product placement. (Such as the Hilton space hotel)

I vaguly remember Clarke saying that he did base it off some short story, but it might have been one of his...

You're both right. Clarke did base 2001 on a short story called "The Sentinal," and it was one of his own. It is not included in the credits for the film.

Found little to disagree with here. He has written an essay on each "act" of the film, and other stuff as well. He breaks down all the scenes, and reveals the deliberate work that went into them. compared with Lucus' commentary on the arena scene "there's no way you can storyboard something like this. (paraphrased: we intentionally put a lot of background fighting in so there's plenty going on. so look at it with astonishment, stupid people.)

anyway, the essays are good and I'd reccommend printing them and reading at your leisure.
