But I don't know what the hell an e with a bar on top is suposed to mean. I never did linguistics, and don't understand the international phonetic alphabet. I much prefer pronouciation aides like that.

Linguistics doesn't use the "e" with a bar over it. Only the dictionary does, and the phonics guides I was trained on as a kid. If it were more widely used, you would know it. It is much more compact and dignified-looking (and accurate) than those silly caveman guides.

Well it seems like a good idea to me to include phonetic hints. I took an independent-study art history course and was completely in the dark on pronouncing Durer, Breugel, et al. (Our base textbook was Gardner's (F)Art through the (p)Ages.")
