I just don't like the fact that that is another really good scene that's been ruined.

He's already ruined the Han/Greedo scene, each scene where Boba Fett speaks (and he only has four lines - why couldn't he have left them alone???) and he's completely vandalised the end of Return of the Jedi. Hasn't this man done enough without destroying a very strong scene in the middle of The Empire Strikes Back?

Exactly. It's like in each movie he had to take one scene that was a good, solid scene and just mess with it. Greedo, the ending on Endor, and now the Emperor. And like I said, McDiarmid doesn't even deliver the lines well. He's terrible. He doesn't even overract like he did occasionally in ROTJ, he just says them as woodenly and unemotionally as possible. And the writing of the new dialogue (moreso, in my opinion, than the new content of the dialogue) is also just poor and amateurish, as if a kid wrote it.

Yep, that's Lucas dialogue for you. He really needs someone else to edit his scripts.

I'm against the changes as a general rule...

he could have:

editied out all burps and farts...

redub the ESB question about the Ion Cannon...

and edit out and credit with lucas name, as this in no way represents his vision, and therefore has nothing to do with the greatness of the OT and it's success...

In the Binary sunset, the colour of one of the suns has been changed.

Boba fett sounds like steve irwin.

Lucas has ruined the vader-emporer scene in empire - the new dialogue, the delivery, everything is horrible about it.

Luke's lightsabre has not been fixed in ANH.

Hayden is at the end of Jedi. I thought this guy would be confined to the prequels, and by the looks on his mug he seems satisfied to be ruining the originals too.

I actually didn't mind the end celebrations on jedi, the music is beautiful but I seeing naboo just makes me think of the prequels so that's another bad spot.

That is the biggest problem with the changes. He is letting the prequels into the classic trilogy. Keep the two seperate, Lucas. Those who like the prequels can watch them but don't force the rest of us to suffer through elements of those films.

Hey guys. Been reading your enjoyable Star Wars discussions for months, finally decided to join in.

I just watched the all three DVD's with my friend and we both came to the same conclusion. Growing up on the original versions, these changes, no matter how small they seem, alter these movies. The minute I heard Boba with Jango's voice I was reminded of ATOC, and my all time favourite movie brought emotions it had never brought out before. Anger and loathing. I did not need to be reminded of a sub par movie while watching one of the greatest of all time. But I guess I was already feeling empty after seeing the terrible Vader/Palpatine redone scene.

Star Wars wasn't nearly as bad, as the '97 special edition had already ruined the original version for me. So what if Greedo/Han and Jabba had been redone again. They were out of place the first time. I was just glad I didn't have to hear Jango when the Stormtroppers talked

And what can you say about the end of ROTJ...Hayden had no business taking Shaw's place. It looks silly, and no matter what spin Lucas put's on it, it's not logical.

I'm just glad I have the original's on video, making sure not to watch them too often so not to wear them out smile.gif

Thanks HK. It's nice to find so many Star Wars fans who know what they're talking about on one site

If I may go back to the changed Emperor/Vader scene in Empire for a moment. It's not so much the surprise Vader shows when the Emperor tells him about Luke. Far before this scene Vader knows about Skywalker as this conversation before the battle of Hoth shows:

VADER: You found something?

PIETT: Yes, my lord.

VADER: (studying the image on the console screen) That's it. The
Rebels are there.

OZZEL: My lord, there are so many uncharted settlements. It could be
smugglers, it could be...

VADER: That is the system. And I'm sure Skywalker is with them. Set
your course for the Hoth system. General Veers, prepare you men.

So like Vwing said, Vader already knew who Luke was. He was hiding from the Emperor the fact he was hunting his son to eventually have them both turn against Palpatine (as KOTOR points out, that's one of the philosophies of the Sith. The strongest survive) Only after the Emperor informed Vader about Luke did it seem like he was searching for him to serve both he and his dark master. Though the flaw in this is I'm pretty sure the Emperor would know Vader was already searching for Luke....Even great movies like Empire have their logic problems

What makes the new scene truly horrible is the prequel-like dialogue and McDiarmid's lifeless acting. It takes away from a once very power point in the movie

QUOTE (Chefelf @ Sep 22 2004, 08:29 AM)
QUOTE (Laura @ Sep 21 2004, 10:06 PM)
Hopefully the Original OT will come out in the next 20 years... if not, that's one cultural experience ruined for all time.

I don't think an officially approved Lucasfilm version will. I'm sure some brave pirates will sell DVDs of the original, but they'll probably be hunted down by Lucasfilm Death Squads.

I just bought a Widescreen version of the OT on ioffer.com. It cost me $40 and may be worth every penny. 7 discs: 3 movie and 4 doco disks. Sweet ass sweet.

Thank you, TR47@burntmail.com, whoever you are!

Well, I'm Jealous.

I saw one there for $75, down from $100. I'd go $40, but have spent a lot on percussion lately.
Happy for you, nonetheless. smile.gif
