A scene I enjoyed in AOTC was the open sandcrawler shot with a sunset backdrop on Tatooine.

That was the only true moment that AOTC felt like Star Wars to me. The rest, nothing.

TPM. It was starting to feel like Star Wars as it began, especially if you didn't read the crawl, but as soon as that the Republic cruiser comes cruising into the scene, I said to myself, the pacing is all wrong. Look at all the other movies. Even though there's a battle going on ANH, the ships are moving at a slower pace. In ESB the Star Destroyers are there, moving slowly, launching their probes, and it's almost ballet-like, like a dance. I get none of this from the PT's. Nothing is admired for a moment.

I could be wrong. But I think Iego Angels are in the Star Wars Dictionary of Creatures {or whatever the hell you call those books yell.gif }

The Iego Angels..........sounds like a minor league hockey team. laugh.gif

Well the opening credits were said already, and Helena said music. Hmm. Hold on, I'm coming to something. Got it.

It's during the space battle (the rest of which is pointless) and it's when they show the view from Anakin's point of view with all the droid fighters flying past him, just like when all the TIE interceptors flew by the Millenium Falcon in ROTJ. I thought that was a nice little nod to the originals and made me smile.

Now I thought there were parts of the movie that certainly weren't that bad, but I'm trying to think of parts that I did just like, and I'm coming up blank. What's funny is I don't even hate it as much as most of you, but I seriously can't think of anything that made me smile, even a little, like you said. Maybe it's just because I haven't watched it in a while (though I doubt it). If you want things that could make me cringe though, I'd give you a bunch of those. smile.gif

Oh wait, one more thing. When Palpatine says to Anakin, "And young Skywalker. We'll be watching you career very closely" or something to that effect, I thought that was pretty cool, at least the first time I saw it. That's almost like the "You'll be the death of me" line in AOTC, it's just like a throwaway line, an inside joke for those who watched the OT, but it's still kind of funny. And actually Pernilla August isn't bad at all, it's just a shame that her character apparently is the Virgin Mary, because if she had a well-written character she could've been really great. But even so, she comes off as a very warm character, in contrast to, well, everyone else.

EDIT: I actually liked quite a few scenes in AOTC (which as a whole I liked much more than TPM) but since this is only about TPM I won't name them.

first off, everyone has seen the OT's. this is another example of lucas SHOVING IT DOWN OUR THROATS that li'l annie is going to be darth vader. it is not funny, it is pointless.

if he really wanted to build a bridge between the prequels and the OT, he should have had the stories be consistant. instead, he throws in a bunch of new characters, new plot lines, and adds these stupid statements now and then.

"well, i've spent an hour of this movie developing this convoluted scheme about the clone army, count chocula, and some bugs, boba fett's daddy... i better remind the audience that they're watching star wars..."

why include lines like this? we know he's going to be turned by palpatine, become vader, and we know he's going to kill kenobi!!!!!

kinda like yoda announcing that the clone wars have begun at the end of AOTC. yeah, we get it, george.

Little Jerry Seinfeld, I think you have provided a very good look at the way Lucas' mind works.

Phantom Menace was a good idea EXECUTED badly.

Mike, please stop saying that .... or I'll tell everyone that you're George Lucas and they'll come after you with pitchforks. This line makes me cringe almost as much as your previous line that "Turning Anakin into a little boy was a stroke of genius."

No. There was nothing intelligent about these films in their planning stages.

However, I do agree with you about these things -

QUOTE
1. The entire Tatooine segment.....excluding the Jar Jar scenes and the Pod Race. These sequences where when the movie appeared to be on solid familliar ground.

They were the only scenes where you could pretend you were watching a Star Wars movie. Very true.

QUOTE
b. You know I don;t know if people realize that..........but Jake Lloyd did a better job at romancing Natalie than Hayden Christenson did.

QUOTE
c. These scense are also the only scenes of any warmth in the whole damn prequel trilogy!!!

I agree with you on those points, mate. Not a lot of warmth elsewhere in the films.

Commoner...

You summed up the experience for me. Unfortunately, I read the words in the text crawl and so the experience was ruined moments after it began. The killing blow came with the phrase "the greedy Trade Federation". I laughed out loud for a few moments until the implications of this sank in - the movie I'd been waiting for, for all these years, was going to be a shitty, dumbed down kiddy flick. Then I just felt like crying.

And as soon as the Republic cruiser came cruising into the scene, I started checking the stub of my ticket to make sure I hadn't actually bought a ticket to a Star Trek movie, because that was what it looked like on the screen.

And when the blatantly Asian stereotype aliens started talking to Natalie Portman, I was truly in horrible suffering. Amidala's stupid outfit, with the "cut-lip" lipstick, the "chicken pox" cheek scars and her awful, awful, awful grating robot voice...

um... where is the crying smiley?

I have to stop now. This is just too painful for me.

I disagree about Anakin's mom. She kind of turns her son over to complete strangers and the whole virgin birth thing is odd. I think she's been driven mad by the rigors of being enslaved to Watto, which is odd because she never does any work for him...

Well, every parent has to turn loose at some time. So I'm sure Anikan's Mom had seen Citizen Kane. In the movie, the Mother hands over custodianship of the boy with the hope that a Benefactor (or higher power. Or blood type,) would watch over her son's potential.

Given unlimited resources, the miracle boy could rise to great power (and threaten anyone!)

Citizen Kane's Mom got the idea from Exodus.

so what was your favourite moment from TPM again?

JYAMG-

no moments from the podrace are ok. i just didnt want people to write "oh the podrace had its moments i suppose" then leave. and that was a good bit, so thats something else we can agree on.

Honestly, the only part I liked was the final sabre deul. Aside from that... ok, I do like the first landing on Tatooine. It brought back the familiar. But I did not like the Podrace.

I was really hoping Anakin would be 18 years of age. I hid from spoliers during that year so I was shocked and suprised to see him as a 10 year old boy. I did not see why it was important to show his life as a good kid. Every one is a good kid. Nobody is evil at 10.

The whole story is as follows. A sweet little boy turns into a confused teenager who later takes over the universe.

It makes me cringe thinking about it. Civillian once made a point that people like ANakin don't turn into Vader's. They grow up in a indifferent and odd ball way, but not menacing killers who have no sympathy for anything.

Well, who knows what has to take place for people to turn like that. I'm sure a lot of serial killers and ruthless dictators were okay kids at 10. However, it is of no benefit (and only serves as a detriment) to the story to show him as a sweet 10 year old. Not even a single sign of him being slightly evil. Why show this, then skip ahead 10 years?

Even in AOTC he doesn't seem evil, just really annoying, whiny and a big jerk. I went to high school with tons of people like that but I don't suspect any of them will be strangling their workers some day.

NOTHING.

I gotta say that I agree with Chef elf that I think the preparations for the duel, with Obi Won and the Darthster, separated by the force wall was the film's best touch. The unspoken but clearly acknowledged warrior's bond between the two ubermensches who just happen to be working on opposite sides reminded me of a couple of my favorite directors: Sergio Leone and John Woo (at the culmination of his Hong Kong years). If there had been more of that sort of thing in the movies (alas, this theme is unmirrored anywhere else in the series), at least their coolness factor would have inched up a bit.

I was really thinking very, very hard about hings I might like about TPM. And I suppose I liked... the anticipation. I sat in a theartre and the first bars of John Williams score were the most exhilrating in the whole film. After that I felt nothing... Bored, maybe

JYAMG- sorry mate, i missed out a comma. I meant to write

no, moments from the podrace are ok.

in answer to your earlier question. individual moments of it are ok, just not the `the podrace` as a whole (if that makes sense)
