After the travesty that was AOTC, this is how I feel towards the SW franchise.

JYAMG,
before i came to Japan, my knowledge of the language was pretty weak, but after i got here i really hit it, mostly in an attempt to end the frustration and difficulties that came when it was impossible to communicate even the most basic ideas to people. as for finding the time at work, my job was pretty undemanding, and i often found myself with plenty of free time with which to study.
i actually met a lot of people who studied japanese at university, who then came to japan really confidant, but then when they came to japan and actually heard real japanese, they we`re totally lost. i found that with actually living here and studying at the same time my level got pretty good pretty quick. listening and pronounciation are things that you can only learn by actually being here. at least in my opinion anyway.
kanjis another thing that looks absolutly impossible, but when you actually get into it a bit and break it down it gets easier. but it`s a total chore to learn, although theres some satisfaction in suddenly being able to read a sign or whatever, you wonder wether all that time you put into it was worth it at all. theres actually a big problem with kids and cellphones now, where they just use the prediction thing to figure out the kanji. so they can read it fine, but cant write it.

You sound like you're a lot better at applying yourself to study than I am. You made a good point about how you need to able to hear the language spoken all around you before you can truly understand pronunciation, etc.
I remember learning the phrase Go Yokuri Dozo "Please enjoy (your meal)" pretty early on for an event at work. Now, the waitresses at the restuarant said that to my friend and I all the time. But it wasn't until after I'd been there for about six months that I realised that was what they were saying.
It takes so long to accustom your ear to a new language. Now I'm going through the whole experience again with Korean and it's still pretty hard to catch even the familiar phrases.

I took my current Internet moniker from the old Sega Genesis RPG Shining Force 2. Slade was a rat thief, who became a ninja after class change. And he's the guy who started the whole game off by pilfering some jewels that were keeping the evil dude locked away in his dimensional prison dealy. I've kinda always wanted to put something big into motion, even if it's on accident, but I have yet to do it.
Nowadays I say it's my first name and last initial rearranged, like I was actually clever about choosing it. Although my subconscious might have picked up on Dale S. = Slade...
Also, I used to be good at shameless plugging, but then I stopped putting worthwhile content, and now my site is down for an indeterminant time, so I can't do it anymore.

QUOTE (sinister grinner @ Oct 4 2004, 10:06 PM)
you ever get the feeling your being heard.
Yes I do, actually, but only when I also get the feeling that I'm being watched as well, because then I have an audience...whom I can't see but they can see me.
Otherwise, I'm just talking to myself. And that would be crazy, wouldn't it.

I took my name 'cause I am actually Madam Corvax's stalker.
Well, almost...My sirname is "Crow," and there was a sketch on MST3K in which Tom servo announces that he'schanged the spelling of his name to "Serveaux," and I quickly stole THAT shit.
Oddly enough, on another MST3K sketch, they were unvieling playing cards they had made up. Crow came up with the "Crow"card, and Mike came up with the "Todd" card, which is pretty canny until you realize that my first name is, in fact, Todd. then it gets a tinge of uncannyness, albiet only to those who know me.
My previous online names were bad.

Oh, I did not know that I have any stalkers. I had to look up the word
STALK: 1.to hunt by following closely and quietly and staying hidden
2. to move silently in a threatening manner
Should I be afraid?
I have heard some guys in the form admitting they have a crush on me, which was very sweet, but I am really quite confused by having a stalker.

You know what's weird, I had a funny feeling you would say it had something to do with MST3K...
