I was a little curious as to the screen names people were choosing, and wondering if they had any significance. Mine name has a bit of a story to it....It's what I was once called in Japanese. Hey, I never said the story was any good tongue.gif

Seriously though, my alias is mostly a bastardisation of my actual name, that being Simon. I actually hate to be called Sime in real life, but online I seem to always go with SimeSublime. Possibly because nobody ever steals it.

So, I now throw open the floor for everbody else's stories.

Everybody misreads my name as slime. I've always thought it rather strange, I mean who would want to be called slime anyway?

Don't let him get to you, Sime.

Me, I don't know why I chose my name. It just seemed nice and inconspicuous at the time, although it probably isn't very inconspicuous now.

I was just going to write in another thread, that for a long time I thought Sime's name is Slime, too.

And I knew a guy, I think he was from Kamerun, whose name was Eslimy (you pronounced "e" like "e" in "end" and "i" like short "i" in pin) and he was mightly pissed when we all called him e- Slimy.

As to my name, "Corvax" is a name of a character in a BBC educational series for children (teaching English to foreigners) called "Muzzy in Gondoland". Corvax is a wicked sorcerer there. I wanted to have Corvax avatar, too, but there wasn't any available in the net.

And I was called alternatively "Lady Corvax", "Miss Corvax", "Madam Corvax" or plain "Corvax" by one colleague at work, because I was going around practising my best BBC English pronunciation, (hopefully) just like the characters in the cartoon.

And I though it would make a nice name for me, because my real name does not have good associations in English. Bit better than E-slimy though smile.gif

Chyld is just an abbreviation of my name on another forum I joined years ago. I prefer the name Chyld, however, so every forum I've joined since has had the five letter version thrown at it.

My name pays hommage to the living legend, Michael Jordan. What have your names ever done, huh? Ya, that's right, I went there.

Well, my story will be typically long-winded (and familiar to some longtime members, since we had a long-running thread on avatars, and I told it then). It is also pretty much steeped in nerdiness, but I think I'm pretty safe here.

My friends and I got into a serious GOLDENEYE craze for a while there. Not the movie; that would be stupid! The N64 game that frankly IMO is the best home video game ever made. I discount PC games, since obviously you can have all kinds of fun trash-talking strangers in the online first-person shooters, but for sitting around drunk with your friends trying to find new variations of weapons and characters, GOLDENEYE is the shit.

Typical evening:
"Have we played all Bonds, rocket launchers, minimum health, in the basement? "
"Yeah, we did that."

"How about all chicks, max health, slappers only?"
"Yup"

"Pistols, minimum health, caves?"
"Not today, but yeah."

"Proximity mines, complex?"
"Are you kidding?"

etc.

Anyway, we got to where there was literally no configuration we hadn't tried. We tried to move on to PERFECT DARK, which was in theory the same game with some variants and different weapons, but for some reason it never played the same in multiplayer, the zones you could play in weren't as cool (In "Villa," you aren't even allowed to go INSIDE the villa, which would have been the whole point!). And the Bond sequels, and the various other fps games based on aliens or fantasy critters or such nonsense, never stacked up. So we'd always go back to GOLDENEYE.

We would play different characters at different times, but there were some that we always fell back to as well. Mine was Boris, Alan Cumming's over-the-top villainous nerd. His loud Bermuda top gave him away pretty much all the time, but I didn't play for subtlety anyhow. Run up, guns blazing, that's my style. If you could hurl the gun at your opponent after you ran out of ammunition, I'd do that too. I had a friend (another Mike) who'd always play Oddjob, but it was just because the character's short and harder to hit, the cheeseball. Anopther was Baron Samedi from LIVE AND LET DIE.

One friend of mine looks like one of the civilians you can play when you activate all the cheats, or finish a certain level, I can't remember which. Suffice to say there's a point where you can play just about anyone in the game, including the extras like scientists and civilians, and there's even a cheat that allows you to play the game's developers. My buddy looks like the second civilian choice (of four) from the Russian streets, who we called "civilian number two."

So there you have it. I should really be "Boris," but it's a silly name, and I always got a kick out of the name "civilian number two." Add to which my friend, also named Mike, wasn't using it.

The avatar I use is the character from the game.
"I had a lot of different ideas. At one point, Luke, Leia and Ben were all going to be little people, and we did screen tests to see if we could do that." -George Lucas, in STAR WARS: the Annotated Screenplays (p197).

On my side of Vancouver it was a rule of thumb that nobody could play oddjob. He was so tiny and fast, dodging bullets, he could just run right at you if you were off gaurd and kill you- all the while evading your machine gun fire.

Rockets was lame. All Pistols and All machine guns ruled.

Chef, who is PAPA REDCLOUD? He seems to be the last writer of L&E, hanging on to the old ways.

Also, I can see the point of wanting to kidnap a human and use her as a slave, but they didn't. They tied her to a flimsy easel for a month. It's assumed they had to feed and give her water. What for? Was she purely ornamental? I can understand them wanting the droids, you can sell those for a lot of money, but a chick who's only skills are finding non-existand mushrooms and getting randomly pregnant, you're not going to get much.
