Malaysian woman moves in with scorpions
Monday, August 23, 2004

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Scorpions will be the bedfellows of a 24-year-old Malaysian woman for more than a month, as she tries to set a new world record for living with the venomous animals.

Nur Malena Hassan moved into a glass box with 6,000 scorpions at a shopping mall in Kuantan, about 250 km (about 160 miles) east of Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, Malaysia's New Sunday Times reported.

Nur Malena showed no sign of fear as she entered the box, the paper reported, and scorpions soon began crawling over her body as she was monitored by medical staff and officials from the Guinness World Book of Records.

The current record is held by Kanchana Ketkaw of neighbouring Thailand, who lived with more than 3,000 scorpions for 31 days in 2002.

Nur Malena, who may leave the glass box for only 15 minutes a day, was to have started her record attempt several days ago but struggled to find enough scorpions, the paper reported.

Wow. By comparison, this makes David Blaine actually look cool.

6000 scorpions, 100 scorpions... you've got about the same risk of being stung either way. Can't honestly see why people bother with this though... there's gotta be better things to do with your time than try to get into the Guiness World Book of Records.

Actually, I think Rory could get into the Guiness World Book of Records for that completely insane post count he used to have. wink.gif

I hope some wiseass in Kuantan, Malaysia brings a boombox and starts playing "Rock You Like a Hurricane" in front of the glass box. Oh, and I take back anything I said about David Blaine ever being cool.

Good work with using your brain, JYAMG. Your bodies surface area can only be cover so much. I'm sure 100 Scorpions would cover you head to toe. And it's those 100, probably less, that would kill you if shit hit the fan. 6000? ha

How big is the glass box? Does she have furniture, perhaps the sale items from the mall's anchor department store? How does she eat? I'm a veteran of fifteen minute breaks, and I can tell you that that's not enough time to eat anything satisfying. For one thing, it's barely enough time to microwave and eat a single slice of leftover pizza, which is hardly enough to live on. Do other people prepare balanced, nutritious meals for her while she is in the box, which she then gobbles up on her break? Won't they get tired of that? Also, does she poo in the box? How do the scorpions feel about that? More importantly, how do the mallgoers feel about that?

Laura- The question of how she takes care of her bodily functions came to my mind as well. The box is glass. Does she do it all during the fifteen minute break as well as shower? I imagine she could eat while in the scorpion box. And just how does one contract a mall to allow something like this? I mean, did she just go into the mall's office and say "Hey, I want to be in a box of scorpions in your mall" and then the owner of the mall said "Great, let's make it happen!" Moreover the previous record holder was from Thailand. I'm not one for stereotypes but I think women in this area of the world are given to locking themselves in boxes with scorpions, just as American women are more likely to talk on the phone a lot.

And by the way, the story that accompanies this article is actually most troubling but the name is truly funny.

I hope for her sake that it wasn't, because one of my least cherished memories is from the summer of 2001, when I watched the Scorpions perform live at the Fete de la Musique in Paris. Heavy Metal, German accented English, and drunken spectators of many nationalities of the male persuasion who, in the spirit of being Rocked like a Hurricaine, felt free to take liberties with my bosom ... No one likes that! tongue.gif

of the male persuasion ?

laugh.gif

that's the most non-comital description of a two option explanation.

we have a newspaper here that likes to overuse the word alleged

inm one great moment... "...the alleged woman..."
(as in the woman accused of the crime)
but honestly... 'the alleged woman' ? ...well? was she a woman or not?
