Vatican sets up sports department
Wednesday, August 4, 2004

VATICAN CITY -- He made saves as a soccer goalkeeper in his high school years in Poland, skied and kayaked in Europe and swam laps in the papal pool. Now Pope John Paul II has set up a sports department to give the Vatican a kind of new playing field in its drive to spread Christian values around the world.

The Vatican announced the initiative Tuesday, pointing to the millions of people who will follow the Olympics in Athens this month as proof of the important role sports plays in today's world.

"The Holy Father has always been interested in sports, and as a means of evangelization and a great way to form youth," said the Rev. Kevin Lixey, an American priest involved in establishing the department in the Pontifical Council for Lay People.

You won't catch me knocking religion in this forum!

Actually, in case you haven't noticed, the pope is too old to do much but momble incoherently. Poor guy. I hope I die before I get too old and feeble. (Although I've heard the pope is a really smart guy.)

And without God actually telling people what to do, what would those poor Catholics do?

Well, if you somehow get out of control with the ball while soccering, you can careene into the goalie.

Why do I somehow get the idea that Jesus would be inherently displeased with the emphasis placed on sports in modern sociery and now the pope only further emphasizing it. I can understand movies and music and writing, those are fine art forms. Sports are just entertainment to keep the masses quiet. Soccer of course has the opposite effect but I'm not sure about that one.

I couldn't agree more. I seriously dislike sport, but then again that likely stems from the fact that I was never any good at it, and traditionally speaking, those that are tend to make life difficult for the rest of us.

I'm surprised no one's made a joke about how their bowling team could be called The Holy Rollers.
