Cell phones prompt earlier sexual debut
Friday, July 30, 2004

A professor at the University of Oslo thinks the widespread usage of cell phones among teenagers is prompting them to have sex at an earlier age. Two of three Norwegian teenagers who chat and send frequent text messages on their cell phones have engaged in sexual intercourse.

The link between cell phone usage and teenage sex emerged in a recent survey of more than 10,000 Norwegians aged 13-18. The survey, backed by the University of Oslo, is part of a major research project called "Young in Norway."

Right, so let me get this straight. We've got people dying from stuff like lukemia (sp), no known cure for cancer, starving people in Africa, and the fuckwit scientists of the world are worried about correlation between phones and sex?

How many times do I have to repeat it...

CORRELATION DOES NOT EQUAL CAUSATION.

We're supposed to believe that someone cell phone use, in and of itself, could *cause* kids to have sex? Maybe having sex causes cell phone use! It's just as plausible. Additional factors are undoubtedly involved--perhaps, for example, that the kinds of kids who have cell phones probably have greater independence from their parents, or are richer, or are drug dealers.

ETA: The article claims that the survey was "corrected" for parental guidance and other factors, but I still don't buy it. The strength of correllation they're claiming to have found can't be explained away by it being "easier to flirt" over text messages. Instant messenger MAYBE, but text messages are effin hard to write!

If anything, chat rooms and IM clients are the cause. Or school dances, or fashion trends, or any of another hundred thousand things. If kids want to flirt over the phone, they can do it on a landline too.

Personally, I blame the ferrets. It's all their fault.

If they tested using no other data, and learned from their survey of 10000 that kids with cell phnes were more likely to have sex than kids wihout them, then I say they have found an interesting, if absolutely dull corellation. It's like saying guys with nice cars will get more sex as teenagers. Ok ... duh.

It's possible constant availability and access make it easier to establish liaisons. However, I doubt the study was performed very scientifically; I suspect that they ran the thing with the corollation in mind, and that's all they were testing for.

I can already see the new cell phone ads.

laugh.gif On the bright side, the "can you hear me now" ads will stop, or at least be modified.

One thing that bothers me: "sexual debut"? Isn't a debut a first public appearance?

And furthermore. I think we're already established that Norway is, to put it politely, one strange country. Maybe we should do what weebl's Kenya animation suggests, and just forget about Norway.

I think people who use cel phones are more likely to say they have sex because a cel phone makes you more important than everyone. Also, another survey shows that people who have cel phones should have long metal objects jabbed through their torsoes. More on this correlation when we return.

Nah, that's Denmark, mate. I think the Scandanavian countries are fairly free of that kind of stuff.
