I'm a huge Asimov fan, and was very concerned by the trailers to this movie, it seemed like they were just making Asimov's stories into another stupid action movie. However, they actually really did a good job. The movie actually keeps with Asimov's ideals, acting almost like a prequel for his stories (if anyone reads him, than I could definitely see The Caves of Steel as a sequel to this). In addition, the CGI is very good, and Sonny is quite possibly as much an achievement as Gollum was, this time taking a non-human character and making him very likeable, and very, well, human. The production design is beautiful, though you have to suspend some disbelief that Chicago will look like this in just 30 years. Will Smith, who I think is very underrated, gives a nice, not too overstated performance. He's still got some one-liners, but overall he does a good job and usually lets the movie speak for itself. The action pieces are very exciting, and make sure that if you experience nothing else from the movie, you will at least have a damn good time. It's not only a good summer blockbuster, it's a good movie, and most surprisingly, is faithful to the concepts of Isaac Asimov. Definitely go see it.

Not having seen the film, I'm going to make a sweeping generalisation about Will Smith. He isn't just the same type of character in nearly every film he does, he is the same character. Will Smith the wise-cracking LA rudeboy, Will Smith the wise-cracking cowboy, Will Smith the wise-cracking man in black...

I really enjoyed this movie.

I thought it was going to tear apart Asimov's ideas.

But it was good, and it had some parts in it that I could definatly draw to I, Robot, The Book.
Booze-fueled paragon of pointless cruelty and wanton sadism.

I just saw and really enjoyed this film...

It wasn't until the credits that I knew it was an Alex Proyas film...
I remember now, him talking about it when i talked to him at the premier of Garage Days...

But typical me just asked questions about the crow.

he wouldn't talk about I Robot to those who asked about it...

also (especially in the interogation) the film achieved a better kubricesque atmosphere than AI.

highly recomend

Didn't the original screenplay not even have anything to do with I, Robot? Because if my source of "some idiot on IMDB" is right I think I'll be dissapointed with this movie.

Maddox didn't like it. He says it's an excercise in advertising, has nothing to do with the book, and sucks ass. And that makes my expectations lower than before.

Maddox is an asshole. From a woman's point of view, anyway. dry.gif

Anyway, back to what I really wanted to say. I can no longer think of I, Robot without the phrase I, Ho-bot running through my head now. Thanks alot, Barend. tongue.gif

Heh. I saw it, I found it quite good. Isn't Will Smith at the mercy of the writers to add in the jokes and such?

Maddox is a dumbass. Don't always trust what the online yuppies say.

Will Smith was on some Bravo-calliber films back in the day, before he hipped up, so rumor has it he can act.

I know this thread is quite dead, but I just saw the movie and thought it was excellent. It's been a long time since I've read any Asimov, but the movie held to not just the themes of the novels, but the delivery also seemed spot on. Same as the Bicentennial Man, I was expecting a load of rubbish when I saw the previews, but the movie itself did a good job.

I love the chase scene in the tunnel. They're going about 100 mph... for about 10 minutes. Let's see. That's about 10 miles underground to get to NYC from Long Island or New Jersey under the Hudson River.

I've heard good things about the film, but its fictional namesake is one of the most tedious books I've read in a long while. The plot of every single chapter goes:

"Egads! There's a problem with the robot, Scientist 1!"
"Blimey! Well, its not one of several complicated theories on positronic brains..."
"Upon my life! Its (cunning use of a Law of Robotics, OR a cunning piece of science? Your choice!)"
"Hurrah! We're saved from horrendous death!"
"Yay!"
Teh end.
When you lose your calm, you feed your anger.
