Police probe missing U2 songs
Saturday, July 17, 2004

PARIS, France -- Irish rock band U2 have called in the police after a copy of songs from their new CD disappeared while they were posing for the cover photo.

An unfinished copy of the group's upcoming CD disappeared while the Irish rock band was posing for the album cover in a studio outside Nice, southern France.

About 20 people who were at Tuesday's photo shoot were questioned by police, who told The Associated Press it was unclear whether the CD's disappearance was accidental or theft.

"A large slice of two years work lifted via a piece of round plastic. It doesn't seem credible but that's what's just happened to us... and it was my CD.," guitarist Edge told the band's official Web site.

I've always liked U2 since I can remember, not sure how this equals funny news. Has anyone seen the story about the terrorist searching manucal in Florida?

They made a manual that says that when police or fire departemnt officials enter a muslim home and there are two or more males living together with little or no furniture they should suspect them as international terrorists. I think the above description qualifies any muslim college guy as a terrorist. Or any college guys for htat matter.

The same thing happened to Radiohead, and "Hail To The Thief" sold pretty damn well. Go cry about it, U2.

I don't think that's really funny either.

What are the chances it's just a publicity stunt, and the CD is really in Edge's back pocket?

ND, you got my vote.

Big deal. I'm sure it was NOT the only copy, they have the master, and if they really want this one back they can look for it on eBay. The rest of us can find the recordings on the peer-to-peer network of our choice. And we can be disappointed in them long before the official releae would have disappointed the rest of their fans.

I saw U2 in 1987, when they were touring The Joshua Tree. Damn that's a good album. Desert dwellers, you can slice one of those trees open, and they have no rings: you actually can't tell their age in the usual method. That album is just like that: timeless and worthy of further scrutiny.

Some time after Joshua tree the band were replaced by robots, and they have written songs for such films as BATMAN FOREVER and DIE ANOTHER DAY. They are not the same guys who created The Joshua Tree, let alone The Unforgettable Fire, which is so unique it may as well fallen to Earth from outer space.

Or a GIANT pouch to hold all of Bono's self-importance.

Hey, U2 did some good work after Joshua Tree. Hands that built America was touching and real and it was as great a song as any of their old ones. Plus I think Bono put in some veiled jab at Bush in one version of it. And the fact that the song was played in a good movie (gangs of new york) dosn't hurt either. Granted it contained Dicaprio but he managed to act and the love story really wasn't at the core of the film. Clearly gangs of new york was no chick flick. Dicaprio's actually surprised me lately with his work in the aforementioned as well as Catch Me If You Can, wherein he even looked good compared to that benevolent juggernaut of modern cinema, Tom Hanks. Well there now, I've defended two rather unpopular (it seems) entities, this should be fun.
