I tried to hold a grudge against actors for what they're doing in their spare time (prime suspect: Tom Cruise), but it never worked out. I'm still getting immersed in stories and forget that I'm just watching actors, which - I hope - is a good thing.

Or maybe I should be more specific and say "good actors" - I could never get immersed in movies featuring Hayden Christensen (come on, Jumper, I've been trying too hard for this) or Shia LaBeouf (with Constantine being the only exception, but that's more because I was distracted by the other boring tidbits they managed to cram into that movie).

By the numbers:

Good point there, Civilian, about Emilio. The guy can actually act and blend into roles. I guess he takes after his father more than his brother does. Also, despite everything, I agree that Charlie was good in his bit-part in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Maybe bit-part is the key.

And Gobbler, yes - Tom Cruise is another prime candidate for this type of thing.

However, maybe you guys have the right idea. After all, we separate people from the work they produce all the time. I love reading novels from the 19th century and frequently I have to let major things slide in order to enjoy them. I have to ignore the rampant sexism, the unveiled racism (along with all that nonsense about physiognomy that was so prevalent at the time) and a host of other things. Often, I get the impression that the authors are ultra-conservative people who have some serious character flaws (by the standards of today, anyway). However, I just have to say to myself that they're products of their time and take their work for what it is, dubious moral values and all.

Although... and I'm thinking this over as I write this... I think that's easier to do because social norms have changed so much since that time that obviously there'd be some major shifts in values. Perhaps people in another century will read things from our time and write university papers discussing how appalling we are (and they might be right). Anyway, the point is that maybe 19th century authors and current actors can't be judged by the same set of criteria. The former were products of their time but what's the latter's excuse?

However, maybe the easiest way is just to ignore actors entirely. After all, a lot of them are simply blank slates anyway, interesting only when they're in character and incredibly boring off-screen. And I guess everyone's going to watch The Dark Knight Rises this month - and no one's going to be thinking about Christian Bale's Terminator Salvation rant when they do.

I still stand by Bale for that rant. By the sound of it, that DOP had it coming.

Yep. And it's nothing compared to rants that I've heard in some "regular" offices... word of advice: Don't ever touch the bearded guy's servers. Even better word of advice: Don't ever touch anything even remotely related to the bearded guy, period.
