the outlined, yellow logo appearing and fading back across a field of stars and the fanfare begins. just After the "a long time ago" card, and all seemed like it used to be.
But then things felt different.
If you didn't feel it, it can't be explained.
but pin the moment the wonder ended? somewhere in the first paragraph.
but way to go. that's still a good many moments.

I did kind of appeciate that guy who hung out with Nute Gun Ray and said "Have you ever encountered a Jedi before? We will not survive this"
But that's because he reminded me of Cats in Zero wing. What would have really been cool was if he'd said
"We have no chance to survive make our time... base base base"
To be honest I also liked the scene in ep 1 where they were staring at the stars and that song was playing slowly, but that was kind of ruined by the kid. So no, on second thought it wasn't too great ummm...
Ok the zero wing thing is the best I've got.

I also liked the scene when two silent, hooded Jedi step into the corridor of the Trade Federation ship. But with the appearance of Jar-Jar it was all over for me.
A scene I enjoyed in AOTC was the open sandcrawler shot with a sunset backdrop on Tatooine.

In all seriousness I think that one of the best moments in the prequels (and in Star Wars in general) is the scene where those wacky video game like walls are opening and closing when Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are chasing Darth Maul. The part where the wall comes up right in front of Qui-Gon and he and Maul exchange that glance. I loved the fact that he kneeled down and showed the true embodiment of the Jedi by patiently waiting and using that time to meditate. I thought that scene was well done and extremely powerful. Even though I think Darth Maul was a really lame antagonist.
I don't think that counts as part of the duel does it? It's related to the duel but even though it contains no stupid backflips it is much more powerful than the rest of the fight.

I find it pretty much impossible that even a really patient zen master would kneel and close his eyes like that in front of a guy who's waiting to kill him. It's stupid.
Something from your list I actually like: the moment right at the begining of the fight, when the combatants size one another up, and make minor adjustments to their costumes.
Honestly, though, there actually was not one scene in the entire TPM that I liked.
I'm racking my brain here.

but I did smile when I saw the Tusken Raiders taking shots at the pod racers and cheering when they hit them. I actually thought that was very cool.

little skywalker's cgi pod racer flying way UP, focus in, dive down and race again. If you have to have the 20 minute scene, I liked that part. (and little else.)
the raiders were fine. was Ani fired at? more "character development" I suppose.

For the record
I do think TPM is a better movie than ATOC and that TPM is more of a STAR WARS film than ATOC.
Phantom Menace was a good idea EXECUTED badly.
The best scenes of the TPM a
1. The entire Tatooine segment.....excluding the Jar Jar scenes and the Pod Race. These sequences where when the movie appeared to be on solid familliar ground.
2. All of the "romantic" scenes between little Anakin and Padme.
-Granted they were written so badly that what should have been a childhood crush turned into full-fledged pedophilia!! }
I like these scense for the fact that:
a. first of all-Natalie Portman looked THE BEST in the scenes. She really did look beautiful. And the funny thing is she was in very down to earth clothes. Her makeup was not overdone, her hair was just the right style and they didn;t have her sticking her damn cleavage out every chance like they did in ATOC,. {not taht I mind that!!!!!} I mean she really looked like a princess in those scenes
b. You know I don;t know if people realize that..........but Jake Lloyd did a better job at romancing Natalie than Hayden Christenson did.
I mean seriously. The two actors actually had chemisty when on the screen!!!!! And Anakin acted like a proper suitor should. I mean he was nice to her, attentive, galant in offering to help them. Hell he is even poetic in telling her that she is an angel. Far from the creepy, femmy, pychotic bitch that Hayden Christensen played.
I mean ladies of this forum....look at the scenes again. If some guy acted the way Jake Lloyd did to Amidala.......wouldn;t you be attracted to him!!!!!!
c. These scense are also the only scenes of any warmth in the whole damn prequel trilogy!!! I mean there is a lot of warmth in the scense. You get none from Obi-Wan or the Jedis. You get more of a sense of fantasy in those scenes. The poor slave boy trying to win the heart of a beautiful queen. Very storybook like.
The overall concept of the Gungans is not bad...........an alien race being held back by the human populating their world, might have been a very nice touch! Unfortunately like much of TPM, Lucas botched this up.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you over the 'Are you an angel' line, though. Ever tried saying that to a woman in real life?

That's gotta be a better line than ".....the sand is rough....not like here......everything here is smooth"
If I asked that that to a girl.......she would call the cops.
Especially if I touched here and gave that that creepy grin!!!!!!

me: are you an angel?
girl: (pours drink on my head)
except in the star wars universe, she wouldn't know what the hell you were talking about, because there ARE NO ANGELS in the star wars universe.
OK - my most 'favorite' part of the prequels...it was subtle, but:
...the look that owen lars gave annie when he first met him. i think that's how most normal people would react the first time they met annie - the arrogant, bratty, bitchy, whiner that he is.
