Hey Chefelf and everyone else, is it possible that we can increase the maximum avatar size to say 100x100, 120x120, or even 150x150? I am the administrator of several major internet sites/forums and I know that the main concern among most forum leaders is that increasing avatar size could possibly slow page download times. That being said (and this is not a slam to this site) I don't think there is a great enough membership or large amount of traffic this site recieves to not warrant an increase to the maximum size of avatars that are allowed. I'd just like for the site/forum leadership to comment on this and give their views so we can all discuss this further smile.gif

I am unsure about financial side here but I read that some hosting companies charge people by bandwidth, or even after they go over a certain limit. If I ever host a proper site I want to do it from my house with the appropriate lines that are unlimited. I would like to know the maximum throughput of this site.

It maybe pretty to increase the avatar size but I don't think it will matter or impact on the performance of this place if the large avatars are hosted from somewhere else, but it might do for the slow dialup users on their side.

generally we don't care about pixel size as much as file size. usually people are inept enough to not be able to make a 60x60 gif or jpeg smaller than 50k which should be no problem at all. extending to 100x100 wouldn't be much of a big deal (anything bigger than that looks weird to me) but maybe if we kept the file size restriction small enough and people were willing to size their files down it might not be a big deal.

i dunno.

I see, the increase for pixel size but not file size as well.
May look blocky or blurry, so could interlacing the image help solve that?
Something for me to try.

Okay, in speaking with Carlos 9 and weighing the options we've increased the size to 100x100. It's not really a bandwidth issue so much as an issue of the forums being thrown of by large avatars. It's annoying when the information on the sidebar is huge and there's just a three word post.

Anyway, the filesize limit remains 10k. Anyone who knows what they're doing should be more than able to keep a 100x100 avatar to under 10k in filesize.

It's as easy as pie. The trick is just to save images as JPEGs, if you are uploading them from your personal computer.
