Just curious as to how others here rank the Star Wars films on a scale of 1 to 10 and in relation to other films. The films I picked for my list, I tend to bring up a lot in conversation so I feel confident in ranking them and defending my choices.

10) The Godfather, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey
9) The Matrix, Reservoir Dogs, Once Upon A Time In the West, O Brother Where Art Thou, John Woo's The Killer, Taxi driver
8) Dawn of the Dead (1979 version), Enter the Dragon, Shogun Assassin, Harold and Maude
7) THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, Ronin, Miller's Crossing, Bourne Identity, You Only Live Twice, Mystery Men
6) STAR WARS, Napoleon Dynamite, Enemy At the Gates, Ilsa She Wolf of the SS
5) THE PHANTOM MENACE, ATTACK OF THE CLONES, Annie Hall, Foxy Brown
4) RETURN OF THE JEDI, The Rock, The Mummy Returns, The Ghost In the Invisible Bikini
3) Pearl Harbor, Rambo Part II, Superman, Casino Royale
2) Armegeddon, Cobra, Airport 79: the Concorde, Death Wish IV
1) Monster A Go-Go

Hmmm. Interesting. It's really hard to rank them with other movies. I like other movies for different reasons. I've tried to group them together with movies that I think are "in the same category" rather than using a rating scale. This doesn't necessarily reflect how much I enjoy the particular movies.

The Empire Strikes Back, The Royal Tennenbaums, Bottle Rocket, The Princess Bride, Rushmore, Bottle Rocket, Sneakers, Annie Hall

Star Wars, War Games, Ghostbusters, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Karate Kid II, Hackers

Return of the Jedi, The Three Amigos, The Karate Kid, Adventures in Babysitting, Superman I, Superman II, The Karate Kid III

The Phantom Menace, National Treasure, All Quartermain movies, Superman III

Attack of the Clones, A Knight's Tale, The Core, Superman IV

My ranking for the SW films goes 5, 2, 4, 6, 1 (i'm gussing 3 will slot between 5 and 2). I'll need more time to compare them to other films I like though...

Like Chefelf said, its hard to compare them to directly to other films. Ill rank them in order of quality, and try to compare same quality of films besides them

1)The Empire Strikes Back. Goodfellas. A Clockwork Orange. The Shining. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (Great story, great acting, mixed in with great special effects)
2)Star Wars. Pulp Fiction. Spider-Man 2. Raging Bull. Raiders of the Lost Ark. Batman (Same as above, just not the same impact on me)
3)Attack Of The Clones. Gladiator, Pirates Of The Carribean, Men In Black, Blues Brothers, Ghostbusters (Silly fun, a good waste of two hours)
4)Return of The Jedi. Godfather 3, The Hulk, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Goldmember, The Village (Vast dissapointments)
5)The Phantom Menance. Titanic, Home Alone, The Matrix Reloaded, The Lost World:Jurassic Park, Pearl Harbour (Part of the all time box office list, doesn't mean they're any good)

You guys have already made the sort of points I would have made. Seems like good fun though.

Ah, but you guys are leaving out the one piece of info I'm most interested in. What films do you think are better than the best Star Wars film (whichever you think it might be).

Well, I don't really watch enough films to rank them like that, but I've certainly never considered even the best of the Star Wars films as the pinnacle of movie-making. They're just enjoyable escapist fantasy; I don't see how you can compare them to films like The Godfather any more than you can compare Terry Pratchett to, say, Tolstoy or George Orwell.

As for my ordinal ranking, I imagine it's similar to that of most people here. From best to worst: Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars, Return of the Jedi, Attack of the Clones, The Phantom Menace.

The sandpeople had women and children. We know this because Anakin killed them how could he tell? The children might be smaller but I never saw a sandperson with breasts. Did they hike their skirts and show him some leg or something?

Also, I can see the point of wanting to kidnap a human and use her as a slave, but they didn't. They tied her to a flimsy easel for a month. It's assumed they had to feed and give her water. What for? Was she purely ornamental? I can understand them wanting the droids, you can sell those for a lot of money, but a chick who's only skills are finding non-existand mushrooms and getting randomly pregnant, you're not going to get much.

Also, comparing a Star Wars film I like to, say, a Carol Reed film feels like comparing football to tennis.

Hmm. But you could compare them to the Godfather based on their impact on pop culture and the national consciousness.

Good point, NTCM.

Of the prequels, the less I know about them, the more I prefer them. tongue.gif
