Barend- The deleted thread problem will kinda do it, but I'll edit some stuff in for you on the final cut. Do you have any particular still existing threads that I could peruse?

Civ- You'd be amazed. My research into Cobnat brought me to the forbidden lands of the FR forums. And, yeah, I stand by my categorization of his first, though only the first, trollsona.

Examples:

http://www.chefelf.c...?showtopic=4782
http://www.chefelf.c...?showtopic=4898

I recognize that nearly everything on the internet shows some degree of self absorption, but if he isn't an attention whore troll than you, Civ, will something something something dark side.

JM this is a sensational job thus far. The timeline seems to be coming together really well.

I vaguely recall a time where Barend, Madam Corvax and myself banned together to take over the forums for a time. I believe you were one of our socialist opposers ;-) but cant remember who your crafty cohort's were and can't find the thread this was in as yet. I wish I could remember what we called ourselves though. Something to do with a triumvirate, but that's all I've got.

I will lay a personal claim to almost bringing a premature halt to Barend's Star Wars parody when I undertook one of my trade mark hiatus'. Sime had to try and contact me to let me know he was threatening not to continue until I came back on and commented on the progress.

The John Gutner Era does need a special place also. The copious use of BLAHMBABAGO!!!!!
(or something of he like) throughout the forum during his tenure rivals any fad that has taken these pages. I believe he also coined the phrase "I HARTE" on this forum. On July 17th 2004 Jon Gutner said,

[B][I][U][FONT=Times][SIZE=1][COLOR=red]
i comee back reel soon on augest seventene!!!!!!!!!!!11111111111
:yuck:

But we never saw him again...

I also remember the Civ and Mike Mac debates, but in addition to this were the Civ and Jordan's religious debates. Someone else was involved for a while as well, but I cant recall who that was at this time. It might have been Jane, but really not sure.

Something else that might be worth tracking is the arrival of some of the Forums celebrities over the years. When did certain people arrive that have had an impact on the fourm? Names such as yourself, Barend, Slade, Hecc, JYAMG, Helena, Sime, Chyld, Jordan, Madam C, Civ#2 and Mike Mac (I will also have probably insulted some people by not mentioning them here, but it was just for example) have all been around for quite a while and taken on lengend status, but there have also been others arriving that have taken on major roles. People like Spoon Poetic, Sailor Abbey, Jaritan, Reiner, Revan, Cobnat, Gobbler, Zatoichi, David-kyo and Otal Nimrodi to name but a few have also stamped there places (both good and bad) on the forum.

I'll have a bit more of a think and trawl around the old posts as well and see what memories I can dislodge. As I was reminded when singing back on yesterday it's now been over 5 years. Hard to believe.

I am writing about Jm in my signature because apparently it's an effective method of ignoring him.

Supes- I'm very grateful that you're here. It's good to have a fellow old timer willing to help with some research, maybe even take up an article? In any event yeah, anything you can get just post links he re and I'll use it in my work. So far I've principally been working on the bit about the two major troll assaults we've had, and Civ is handling the SW forums.

And JM I'll see what I can find. It will be fun going back and having a look at what has actually happened over 5 years.

Something else that I've just noted while trawling through some of the old materials is the things that we have learned over these years.

I've just found a post in the Star Wars Forum that ended back in 2003 where we were discussing the CGIing of Christopher Lee in the fight scenes against Obi-Wan and Anakin. In these posts we were al disgusted at the notion GL would use a stunt double and CGI ovr Mr. Lee. The crazy thing is since then I ahve actually come to know the guy who was that stunt double and did all those scenes. I've also come to find out that on the offical Star Wars Monopoly game it is actually Kyle's image and not Chris' that appears on the box. If you look closely you can see it's Kyle in the Dooku outfit and a gray wig.

It doesn't change my views on the movie but still stresses the point that you live and you learn.

Yeah I remember that, I was pretty stunned myself. Maybe we should do a "what we learned on the forums" section and have people submit what they've learned here, I'm sure we'll get some pretty cracked out asnwers!

The Great Homicest Of Snake Logan

The Era of the Great Homicest of Snake Logan is one of the more complicated troll assaults to explain. At first it seemed that it began around December fifth 2007. However, it was revealed in early 2008 that Snake had at least two alter egos on the forum, and one of them had appeared prior to the manifestation of Mr. Logan. As such, this history will be split into three parts, including the pre-homicest time when Snake Logan was known as Cobnat, and the post homicest when he went by Deuacon.

Although Cobnat was not a classic disagreeing type of troll, he was the less dangerous but potentially more divisive attention whore variety. The forums at large were mostly spared this as he concentrated all his energies on Fully Ramblomatic's forums, even drawing individual rebukes from Yahtzee (as opposed to Yahtzee's regular blanket rebukes of everyone). Eventually he followed to old attention whore formula of swearing to leave, even creating a thread for his alleged goodbyes. The thread dragged on for some time prompting Yahtzee to comment "Traditionally, goodbye threads work better if somebody leaves."

Cobnat's plans, as announced in the FR forums, were to next go to the Debate club, prompting Jane Sherwood, who was participating there at the time, to comment "SHIT". He was apparently unaware that the careless disdain of the FR forums was possibly surpassed by the ruthless nitpicking of the debate forums. He tried numerous feints:

Humanitarian: "so many civilian lives are lost due to pointless bomings by Bombers"

Religulousness: "I am a christian, but I dont believe in Christ... "

Then he got seriuos: "Im not that kind of person, I am very seriuos about god and other seriuos topics that are ment to be seriuos."

At firtst he maintained a quite friendly air in attempts to fit in, agreeing with most everyone, including people who would later become bitter enemies of his current or later personas. It wasnt long though before Slade ended up balleeting a post or two of his for off topic spammage, coincidentally the same thing he was allegedly banned from a previous forum for according to an FR user.(link dead)

His first real battle ended up being with Supes about software or something, and features chestnuts such as "The first un-official linux system was made in 1896" Later he echoed his attention whoring in FR, complaining "Your now attacking me! why is everyone so against me!? " Seeking to hide from the pain inflicted by this "Your" person, he descended into internet alcoholism: "I drank two 750ml bottles of Russian Vodka in two minutes, Im feeling a bit off.... thankgod i didnt throw yup.. "

Cobnat entered the debate forum pirates thread, but didnt seem capable of keeping track of his character. He demanded to be a Russian in a Caribbean colonial setting, then tried to instigate a mutiny on the ship he captained for the navy and turn pirate. He was, in short order arrested. He escaped however, but neglected to bring any supplies in the row boat he stole. Slade found him half dead from sunstroke and thirst, and saved his life. Then I sent a plague of locusts on Slade's ship for doing so. Cobnat complained and flooded the topic with posts asking what he could do, leading me to reply:

"you're pretty much going to be murdered in Slade's next post if he has any sense, so I'll roll to see if you can knit. Yes, yes your character can knit. I'd advise you to start knitting a funeral shroud."

He left the thread shortly thereafter.

He continued on, even touching on issues that he would later examine in his other personas, such as oligarchies, which he defined thusly: "Its like a Monarch Republic but instead of representatives, it has something like "sub bosses". Its like a Higharchy. " He was banned for a period in March (Still researching this, unsure why) and created a temp account shown here, apparently not understanding the idea of a ban.

The general activity "against" him especially in the debate forum where he ended up arguing frequently against Jordan and clashing occasionally with everyone else anyhow over topics such as his Ayn Randian ideal of government, may be the reason that, in December of 07, he chose to create the most noted Persona, and the one that would define the era as Spoon Poetic put it, The Great Homicest Of Snake Logan.

[edit: research shows that it was after the libertarian thread debacle mentioned above the Snake Logan was created, this thread containing his last debate club post for some time.

Stay tuned for part two of this article

Defense Against The Dark Trolls with Professor J M Hofmarn:

There are three varieties of trolls and three distinct ways to combat them. Hannibal exemplified the worst variety, the uber troll. Snake and Deuacon represented the merely oppositional troll, who had not yet graduated to the kind of outright flamery and spamming that exemplify the uber troll. However, the more poorly understood variety is the attention whore, or proto troll. While most trolls are male, this variety can occasionally include females, the only troll caste known to do so with any frequency.

The attention trolls are usually worse than the oppositional trolls for shear volume of posts, and are the least amusing troll type. They are easily spotted by the girth of threads they create, their attitude towards other users as their “audience” and the subjects of many of their threads. Their threads will most often if not always involve inane information about themselves presented without a thought to amusing others, or their opinions on things. They may also employ large attention getting avatars, signatures, etc. The frequent use of “I” or “me” in subject lines will be obvious. This variety of troll can be said, from a psychological point of view, to possess a low-grade histrionic personality disorder.

Generally when confronted for the girth of, or the pointlessness of their topics, they will dramatically and publicly swear off the forums, flame, or other such actions. Though it is rare that the troll will vacate the forums in actuality, often claiming to have, at the last minute, decided to stay. Usually for the professed reason of bothering everyone more or some such. The frequent use of words such as everyone and all of you are another staple of the attention troll, who will view the world differentiated between those on the stage (me) and those in the audience (everyone).

The preferred defense against the attention whore troll is simply to ignore them and try to close their threads as swiftly as possible. This will result in a temporary increase in post and thread volume (it is, after all, always darkest before the dawn), or more bafflingly, by the posting of one or more threads assuring that all attention trolling has ended. This, like all statements from this group, need be taken with a grain of salt. If the troll can be successfully ignored they will likely give up and leave.

Cobnat was originally banned because he asked ChefElf to ban him, citing some sort of forum addiction. He was unbanned, and ChefElf vowed never to ban someone upon request again when he created a "Hey, unban me!" account and thread.

Ah yes, I remember now. I was trying to figure out why he got banned, and my failing was that I had assumed there was a logical reason for it.

Also, I need to add in that he got ultradissed by Deepsycher.

That was alright... Thanks JM. happy.gif biggrin.gif

Where was Deepsycher from anyway? Some of the things he said were off the wall hilarious.

Best thing I read of his was about relationships (possibly in the boys vs. girls debate) where he makes an impressive analogy. It was along the lines of: "arguing with a box of chocolates because you ate them all!"

That got me laughing and a lot of posts by Jordan where he gets really mad about something. Best ever was when KotOR couldn't work on his PC. Or when KotOR II's ending disappointed him, I cried laughing at that crap.
