OK I'm not sure if this has been covered in other fora but it was a big thing that I thought about after watching Ep III so I thought I'd open it up to some dedicated fans to either fix my opinions, discuss them or possibly validate them. Beware this is a spoiler post so don't read if you haven't seen Ep III and want an uninfluenced view.

So I watch Ep III and come back on a high, I've discussed it a bit with my friends but they're not as keen as me so I post a bit on my blog. However now I've discovered you guys I'll post it here. Basically the question is what is the overall strategy of Sidious/Palpatine? Here's my constructed story:

Sidious/Palpatine + Maul + Dooku? (Probably Dooku acting as agent for Sidious) feed Trade Separatists mixture of truth and lies to get them to break away and start war- warning them of danger within the senate (which Sidious/Palpatine is!)

E.g. Count Dooku tries to turn Obi over to dark side - with the truth...?

Is Dooku actually a partially good or is he always twisting the truth? I know people criticised Ep II for being fiddly with this point but in order to be constructive is there a spin on this that hangs together?

So all of this is in order that Sidious/Palpatine can get the senate to grant him permanent power and also use the emergency powers to bring in the clones (which he's already ordered) so he can exterminate the jedi.

But this seems a bit much to swallow seeing as it requires a lot of belief in his own powers and a stupid amount of foresight?

Yes/no - discuss.

PS When(If) I have kids I reckon I'll show them 4-6 then 1-3 as 3 works much better as a tragedy seeing as we know Anakin will fall but sort of root for him not to - one of Ep III's improvements over the first two prequels. I'm sure some of you will say you wouldn't let your kids anywhere the prequels but for the sake of argument would anyone let someonoe who knew nothing of star wars watch them 1-6?

Oops this might be more appropriate in Ep II forum sorry about that.

God no. My friend never saw the classic trilogy, and he didn't want to until he saw all three of the prequels. Now I feel sorry for him. They need to be played 4,5,6,1,2,3 or not at all.

If I met someone who was somehow ignorant of Star Wars but was curious about the movies, I would show that person what is now known as "Episode IV". Then, if he or she wanted more, I would show Episodes V and VI.

I wouldn't even mention to this individual the existence of prequels. If asked abotu them, I would say that the movies inspired alot of spinoffs and fan fiction, like the EU novels and the holiday specials, and this included three prequels about the life of Vader before the first movie, but that none of this stuff is considered to be very good.

As for the plot, Lucas made everything up as he went along, even in the original trilogy. Eventually things became tangled in the contradictions this approach generated.

The emotional impact of Vader telling Luke he is his father loses everything if you watch the films from the PM on. I also think it was cooler from the perspective of "How did all this happen with Vader and Empire" than "How will the Empire Fall"

My child is not allowed to watch Star Wars outside of our house. There will be no prequel infestation OR Special Editions.

I am a responsible Dad.

I am sure watching Saga in order would be aninteresting experience!

Yes, that's what he's afraid of. I'm afraid of anyone liking those movies. I like it when those close to me have good taste. That way we can enjoy the same stuff, instead of having to deal with crappy movies.

And you're the best dad in the universe, Lebowski.

You don't really misunderstand my sentiment, do you? Anyone that obtuse would definitely have...trouble...typing...uuhhhhmmm...then again you do LIKE the prequels.

Never mind. I wouldn't dream of taking advantage of your "condition" like that.

My good.
