My Star Wars Interview Thursday, May 19, 2005

Last week I was interviewed by Brad Burke who is the entertainment editor of the Peoria Journal Star of Peoria, Illinois. I was surprised to find out that Mr. Burke was writing an article about the upcoming release of Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the sith and he wanted to get my input on what I was expecting from the new film and, more so, how I felt about the prequel trilogy so far. As you could imagine, I had a lot to say. We ended up spending almost an hour and a half on the phone.
I thank Mr. Burke a lot for contacting me as he was very nice and we had a great talk about the movies. At one point he apologized for keeping me on the phone for so long to talk about Star Wars. As if talking about Star Wars is something I'd get sick of. You have my number, Brad. Give me a call any time.
Read Brad Burke's article here: Dividing Force: Do the three prequels have what it takes to be a part of that galaxy far, far away?
The subjects of the interview are: Craig Shurtleff, a film professor; Joshua Griffin, co-owner of the fan site TheForce.net; Dan Madsen, former president of the official "Star Wars"/Lucasfilm fan club and founder of Star Wars Insider magazine; and, for some reason, me. I was shocked when I found out someone wanted to interview me about Star Wars but I was far more shocked when I found out that the others in the interview were serious Star Wars fans. After all, I'm just some guy.
And with that, I'm off to catch an early morning showing of Revenge of the Sith. Then it's off to work on my unnecessarily lengthy review which I hope to have up sometime in the next week and a half.

Cool. Being in Germany, I probably won't get to see the film for quite a while, so I'm looking forward to the review (and the inevitable Reasons to Hate list. )

The sandpeople had women and children. We know this because Anakin killed them how could he tell? The children might be smaller but I never saw a sandperson with breasts. Did they hike their skirts and show him some leg or something?

Also, I can see the point of wanting to kidnap a human and use her as a slave, but they didn't. They tied her to a flimsy easel for a month. It's assumed they had to feed and give her water. What for? Was she purely ornamental? I can understand them wanting the droids, you can sell those for a lot of money, but a chick who's only skills are finding non-existand mushrooms and getting randomly pregnant, you're not going to get much.

Oh man, this site is going to get a lot of hits.
"I had a lot of different ideas. At one point, Luke, Leia and Ben were all going to be little people, and we did screen tests to see if we could do that." -George Lucas, in STAR WARS: the Annotated Screenplays (p197).

He STILL doesn't get it in the article, though!!!! We didn't want to see Vader running arond waving his lightsaber----Gawd, I want to see characters I want to LIKE! I want action that makes sense! I want the characters from the OT (if they're used) to be LIKE THE CHARACTERS THEY WERE IN THE OT!!! I don't give a wit about Vader. Even if Anakin was transformed at the very end of Episode III and we see him in the Vader suit, I'd be fine with that, but...GOLDAMN!!
Deep breaths... going away now...

Chef you're like a celebrity. When you make it to the top, remember me.
Judging from the reviews, it seems that the new hate list might be a tad shorter in length..

Props, Chef. My Mom moved to Peoria, I'll see if she can save the paper.
That would be great. Another Despondent scan job?

Yes, the place is crawling with new people, but I hope too you won't forget your most faithful readers...
Not on your live, MC. You and I have been through a lot together.
As for the new readers, that is to be expected and will only grow with the new movie out. Star Wars is now the number one searched phrase on Google. Here they come!

Hmm... I'm a bit worried about what this will do to the readership here. It's currently a small community (barring the SW forum). This will probably bring in a ton of new users...
Don't be worried. The Star Wars community is growing at an incredible rate! I will be monitoring the forums and expanding them as necessary in the coming weeks to try to keep up with all of this.
