Well, there are only two ways about it... either she died in childbirth, which would be strange given the advanced medical facilities of the day. Or she died becasue she 'lost the will to live', which dosen't make you happy either.
I have less problems with the event painting Padme's character negatively, becasue all we know of Padme from the OT is that she is beautiful and kinda sad, and this in no way contradicts that.

According to the spoiler, there's no way Leia would have known that.

If that was the case it wouldn't have been in the movie, because it would have been irrelavent.
Besides if we keep that line of reasoning, it leads to can of worms.

You're forgetting "kind," which her abandoning her children at birth totally contradicts.

Ofcourse, which is why we're having this discussion. I think I have mentioned elsewhere that I would have preferred for Padme to live for a few years after giving birth to the twins. Anyway, my comment was not related to 'when' Leia dies, but 'why' she dies. We know she has to die eventually anyway. To have her die because of sadness over the loss of Anakin, etc is far more poignant that to have her die of medical or biological reasons.

I don't buy that becasue she abandons her children either way. Going by the arguement Even if she does live, but dies when Leia is 3 or 4, doesn't that make her unkind as well? Afterall she lets Luke be taken away from her at childbirth to live on some desolute (and unsafe) farm in the middle of nowhere, while herself living with Liea somewhere else, and then dieing when Leia is 3-4 (or whatever age), thus abandoing her at a very impressionable age in childhood.

Not poignant at all.
Well, I think you're being overly harsh on her. The poor girl has been through a lot.
I doubt that 'losing ones will to live' is a conscious decision besides.
Anyway, if I have been spoiled correctly, she begins to die before giving birth, and once the medical droid and Obi-wan (or yoda or whoever) realize that nothing can be done to save her, they move to deliver the children (presumably artificially).
