On the whole miscarrage story, That was the straw that broke the camels back for me, I shall read CAD no more.

Why? Simple. Only Fools and Horses did abortion, But CAD is not like Only Fools and Horses, its more like Phoenix Nights (if that), and could you imagain if they tried to bang on a sensitive subject like miscarage onto Phoenix Nights?

All british sitcom references by the way, so you probably won't understand if you're fat. Fact is, CAD is not a 'soap-com' and If buckley wanted to do a moving story then he should have just started a new webcomic.

Dude, thank you for doing that joke right.

And also I totally learned about "Only Fools and Horses" when I was looking up the Yellow Peril.

The Wikipedia is pretty awesome.

I forget what expression that came from.

Anyone care to help me not look it up?

Or Australian, since we get most American sewerage with the exception of the ABC (the australian one) which contains mostly british programs. Hurrah.
You say CAD shouldn't have a subject like that, but they've been building up to things like it. Sure, it's mostly comedy, but sometimes it falls back on drama, like when their house burnt down.
I agree, it's not a 'soap-com' but comedies are allowed to do that sometimes. And he'll probably do it again, with a different subject.

I personally like the serious side. It stops the comic from getting too distant from the reader. Indulge me for a moment, and listen to what I have to say.

Entertainment, in all forms that don't have a message, are meant to entertain. To do this they're meant to get you interested in the story and get you to believe the story is happening. Often comedy can do this by having realistic scenarios that are twisted to entertain.

Sometimes comedies twist scenarios so much that they become unrealistic and you start to feel distant from the show. While this is fine, it does take away from the comedy (with the exception of parodies and sketches).

To make the audience think of it as they use to there's often something serious in there. A comedy comic that is meant to be based within reality especially struggles with this problem. A comic that begins to become unrealistic by adding unusual characters or overexaggerated scenarios needs something to slap itself in the bounds of reality.

This is my personal opinion on the concept.

CAD is meant to be in the bounds of reality, but things like robots and penguins start to live with people and companies start kidnapping people. Your mind clicks and goes, 'hold on now, this is a bit of a stretch'. So, they add something serious.

Only something especially clever, like Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, can exaggerate a scenario or characters and still keep you in reality.

Ah but let us not forget that in the early days ethan was being killed by an arrow through the torso almost every other week, the sheer jump in development which it has made makes me feel like its not the same strip any more. Generally I liked the old CAD, minimalist though it was, If I want to be moved I'll go and read Watchmen or something, miscarage is all a bit to heavy to be read while I'm half asleep and still scoffing down my breakfast.

Watchmen and Achewood are easily the only comics (printed or online) that I've ever seen do the "drama" thing right. They actually had the tragic moments be part of the character development, and Achewood didn't even do it seriously. Nowadays you just say one of your characters is raped or abused, and have a panel of them crying about it, then call it drama. Problem is, in about five or so panels, Ethan is probably going to forget about his dead baby in favor of a joke about how long the cutscenes in Metal Gear Solid 4 are. It's hard to take it seriously at that point.

Either way, I have the feeling that Buckley is just trying to ride this thing out for as long as he can. If he starts something new (good or not), people are just going to warble on and on about how CAD was better. Why change the menu when the old stuff's selling well and is easier to cook? Sometimes I really can't fault him for keeping it up.

Just read these few strips. Problem is that he really sucks at the emotional garbage (too), he should just go for the usual "wacky humour" he's so "great" at.

There wasn't so much a jump in developement, well, not for me. And I read most of the comic within a week. It may have more been a shock to the system to go from the comedy to something so deadly serious so fast.

About the whole 'ethan will suddenly be distracted by a game' thing. Buckley actually is a lot better at keeping focus for a while then you seem to think. In other storylines he's continued on without any sudden drop of plot, though I guess a plots blunt ending could be argued against this.

The usual wacky humour is sometimes interrupted by serious plot. I'm not kidding. The were attacked by a robot and their house burnt down. There were very few jokes at that stage. Am I the only one who has read through that section?

I have a question:

If most gamers 'enjoy' CAD, does that mean that gamers are "stupid"or have no proper sense of humor?

Instead of wasting my time and mocking me over the fact that I haven't spent enough time on the internet to know every crappy little 4chan meme you could have just told me.
Now we have two useless posts instead of one.

Wow, you guys are dicks.

B^U is an emoticon of sorts I guess (flip it on its side). It's to make fun of the slack-jawed, droopy-eyed look that's usually on the characters' faces.

Yes, most gamers are stupid. This goes for every gamer who abused someone because they were winning, abused someone because they were losing or tried to teabag them. If that ever happens in one of my games a friend usually snipes the bastard.
So it's a side on face, that looks like it's opening wide...

I'm a dick, sometimes I'm not proud of it, others times I feel some people deserve to tolerate me.

Thought I should add, before you come up with some remark, it's always about gay sex.
