Alright, I don't get what the whole deal is here. Now, as an outsider, I will probably believe whatever reason you give me, but we all know Georgie-boy isn't all that bright (runs with the name, I suppose devil.gif) but if you say you want what the original Star Wars was on DVD, and he gives that to you, I don't know why you're complaining. He simply took you literally.

Hmmm, stupidity over greed...? Possible but unlikely. The complaints are more than valid, he's asking for it, if you read the thread thouroughly and have any idea about dvd compression. Check out any professional DVD site commenting this release.

Thinking about it, I'm surprised he didn't publish the OT on Beta. "Well it was a great format back in the day..."

Otal, I agree with you. I don't know why anyone is complaining... partially.

I have to agree that beggars can't be choosers, especially when it come to the OOT. However, I can also understand why people feel cheated by Lucas for not spending a little time and effort (*money*) on giving the classics, that made him what he is today, a proper dvd release treatment.

Personally, I like the OOT, "errors" and all. I'm hoping the picture quality won't be all that bad, the non-anamorphic doesn't bother me all that much, and the sound is not an issue with me at all. And you are talking to a guy who has an awesome 5.1 Dolby digital system in his apartment, and a nice big screen to watch it on too.

Beggars can't be choosers. Oh yeah, I won't be buying these either. smile.gif Because I maintain that he will release a cleaned up version in just a few months to coincide with the 30th anniversary. And I'm sick of throwing money at the machine. And I'm perfectly happy with my bootlegs off of eBay that are really awesome, near-perfect copies. K, I'm done.

Why buy the bootlegs off ebay when you can download superior fan versions for free?

That's all I'm saying...

Fair point. But once I get a pristine copy of the unaltered Star Wars trilogy preserved on DVD, I'll probably leave Lucas alone anyway. He can go on to make more "special" editions, prequels and sequels if he wants - but if the fans of the original movies can be left alone to enjoy them without having their happy little memories trampled, I won't really care.

yeah once i get these, the gloaty smug stupidity of the rest of the world can sit on the spoils or their mainstream medocrity phalating themselves all they want...

either way, i'll be happily locked away with my inferior copy of a superior film trilogy, and the bordering retarded society out there can still be proud of their 'star wars for dumb assholes editions'

It's a great thing I still have a nice fullscreen TV, so the non-anamorphic DVDs won't be a problem.

As long as the picture and sound is good, I'm set.

G'day again. I have good news for those who are dissatisfied with the shitty DVD covers that Lucasfilm are providing with these things.

After an extensive internet search, I have found good alternative covers. It wasn't easy. There were a lot of covers that were semi-good but were ruined by having Episode IV, V or VI on their spines (that stuff is too painfully similar to official Lucasfilm releases and reminds me of the prequels). A lot of them also had stupid Lucasfilm slogans on them, dumb blurbs and stylistic elements that reminded me of special editions and subsequent re-releases.

What I was looking for was something with class - with the classic nostalgic poster art and the classic logos for the movies not only on the front cover, but on the spine as well. And, my friends I have found it. These covers are simple, very stylish and elegant. And as an added bonus, they don't have Lucasfilm written anywhere. Open them, save them, darken them a bit with some photo-editor .... and you will have your new DVD covers ready to print. Enjoy (and think well of me for finding them).

Nice find JYAMG, these are my favourites too. Especially the New Hope one. It's very similar to the first image I ever saw of Star Wars by one of the Hildebrandt brothers. Yeah the older one is a bit more garish but it brings back great memories... smile.gif

Hmm... I tried to have a look at your ones, Gerhard but the images don't come up for some reason. It's funny actually - they come from the same site and just like the ones I found, if I try to delete little sections from the address to find the gallery where they came from, it never works. And when I go back to the site's home page, I can't find either your covers or mine.

But HK-47, I'm glad you liked the other ones. The other thing about them I've realised is that they are versatile. If you wanted to put a blurb on the back and include some screenshots, you could do it easily. Also, nice picture by the way.

Oh yeah, I remembered the last thing that really bugged me about some of these fan covers. They were boasting a whole heap of features that, while they look good on paper, will not be on the DVDs. For example, "Anamorphic transfer", "Digitally Remastered" and "With commentary by Ralph McQuarrie". I mean, that all sounds great but if you're not going to get any of these things on the DVDs, then all of it will just serve as a painful reminder of how little effort Lucasfilm put into producing them.

Yep, keeping it simple is definitely better.

I know the first one - that's the one that was on all the old copies in the video store. It's very cool for the nostaliga alone. The second one however, and I don't think anyone can argue, is a beautiful work of art and really encapsulates the spirit of the film.

As for this mysterious hybrid you're talking about, I don't think I've ever seen it. I did come across a picture that may be it. It's not very big though. Anyway, this is it -

I can't say I'd ever seen this one before either but it's pretty cool. Man, it's been a lot of fun finding all the posters online. It's great - and it brings back that sense of wonder I had with Star Wars when I was a kid.
